Communications - Competencies
Providing modern, safe, and dependable transportation and mass transit services increasingly relies on intelligent transportation systems (ITS) such as telematics, centralized control systems, public information displays, public safety, incident management, and facilities security (e.g. CCTV). Virtually all ITS and similar systems used worldwide today to operate our roads, ports, airports, buses, and railways over any wide area rely on a robust, reliable, and secure communications infrastructure. In fact, the National ITS Architecture model itself requires land-based and wireless carriage for nearly every one of its technologies represented. This discipline is served by many of the same personnel who also perform services for our large public safety portfolio.
Staff Expertise
Each of our firm’s professional radio and telecommunication system analysts, planners, engineers, and project managers have a strong work history on their resumes working for transportation and mass transit agencies across the USA to introduce leading-edge communication technologies to their respective operations.
Institutional Expertise
In today’s world, public safety and transportation work together nearly every day – particular when incidents arise that demand close response coordination. By working with transportation and transit agencies every day, we understand and therefore design our communication infrastructures for transportation and transit agencies as critical-grade resources.
Technological Expertise
We have an intimate, hands-on, practical knowledge of all current and emerging wired, fiber, and wireless technologies pertinent to wire-area transportation and transit operations:
- Wireless Land Mobile Radio
Conventional or trunked systems delivering private, secure, interoperable, voice and mobile data communications over a wide area via one or more tower sites placed in the agency’s service area.
- All frequency bands (VHF, UHF, T-Band, 700/800/900 MHz)
- All major system suppliers (Motorola, M/A-Com, EF Johnson, etc.)
- Single site, multi-site, and simulcast repeater configurations
- APCO Project 25, SmartNet™/ SmartZone™, OpenSky™, VIDA™, LTR™
- Wireless Cellular Systems
Public, subscription-based, cellular telephone networks for voice and data communications.
- GSM/GPRS/EDGE/3G (AT&T, T-Mobile)
- 1x-RTT/EV-DO (Verizon, Sprint)
- Wireless Broadband Data Systems
Public and private wide-area networks for broadband speed mobile data, live video, etc.
- Mesh networks (802.XX)
- WiMAX™
- Advanced Wireless Services (AWS)
- Backhaul Interconnect Networks
Local and wide-area connection of communication carriage to and between control centers, maintenance shops, network operations centers (NOCs), and traffic management centers.
- Private fiber optic systems (single and multi-mode; OC-3 to OC-192)
- Licensed microwave datalink (6-32 GHz; OC3 to OC12)
- Spread spectrum datalink (UHF & 960 MHz; 4.9 & 5.8 GHz; fractional T1 to T3).
- Public, subscriber-based IP broadband services (Verizon, AT&T, etc.)
